This collection of thoughtful and interesting studies began as a symposium held at the University of Toronto in March 1991, where, according to the editor’s preface, several of the papers were presented. The prefatory material is followed by nine papers which, using the somewhat wry heading of "death and taxes" as a takeoff point, illuminate a wide variety of topics over a wide geographical and chronological range.
