板垣退助曾于明治末年大正初期大量撰文驳斥当时学界有关武士道的渊源等学说，并以武门之后的身份就武士道的主要特质内容、发展过程以及进化的原因等进行了论述。他的论述糅合了大量实例，试图力证武士道在铸成日本民族优秀的国民性、吸收近代文明建设强盛国家、中兴国运等方面的伟大作用和普世价值，最后还通过“进化”、“文明”等近代时髦概念将武士道与“自由”内在逻辑联结起来。他的武士道论在主观上存在借重武士道为其曾经领导的自由民权运动和思想进行自我定位，在客观上起到了在新时代向日本民众宣扬、普及“武士道”，推进武士道的国民道德化的作用。%Itagaki Taisuke, as a descendant of martial family, has written a great number of theses to disprove the origins of Bushido held by the temporary academia during the juncture of Meiji period and Taisho period. He discussed the main specialties, the development and the evolutional reasons of Bushido. His discussion, a mixture of abundance of evidences, is a laborious argumentation of the great role of Bushido in the cast of ifrst-class Japanese nationality and in the process of civilization and prosperity. Finally, he interlaced Bushido with“freedom”internally and logically via the taking of modern fashionable concepts like“evolution”and“civilization”and so on. His Bushido theory is a borrowing of Bushido to self-deifne the Free Civil Rights Movements and Thoughts led by him subjectively, and a propaganda and popularization of Bushido objectively. It boosts the national moralization of Bushido as well.
