Marine ecosystems are of great importance to humans since evolution. Conventionally, polysaccharides were isolated from plants, algae, etc. As science advanced, various sources of exopolysaccharides have been found. Exopolysaccharides have wide applications in food, medical, pharmaceutical and environmental industries which lead to the exploration of more aspects regarding extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). Various marine bacteria, such asBacillus, Halomonas, Planococcus, Enterobacter, Alteromonas, Pseudoalteromonas, Vibrio, Rhodococcus, etc., have been extensively studied for the marineEPS isolation and its characterization. In this review, the composition, biosynthesis ofEPS, along with major sources ofEPS and potential applications havebeen discussed.
