THE USE OF THE RELATIVE PRONOUN THAT AND ITS OMISSION IN RELATIVE CLAUSES IN ENGLISH:PROBLEMS FOR CHINESE-SPEAKING ENGLISH LEARNERS AND A POSSIBLE SOLUTION
IntroductionThis paper aims to explore the use of that and its omission in relative clauses in English for thepurpose of language teaching in a Chinese foreign language learning (FLL) situation.The use oromission of that is one of the most difficult areas for Chinese English learners.This paper explores,and discusses the problems of Chinese students towards this language element by studying examplesmade by Chinese students.For the purpose of language teaching,a pedagogical description of the useand omission of that is given.A solution is proposed within which various exercises types arepresented and discussed.
