This research made comparisons of cohesive ties and chains between the good and poor compo-sitions of twenty eight Grade Four English majors in Zhongshan University to examine the kinds of cohe-sive features that contribute most to good writing.Except for lexical cohesion, none of the other cate-gories of cohesion,as identified by Halliday and Hasan(1976),was used more frequently by the goodwriters than by the poor ones. However, cohesive chains(a series of lexical collocations, reiterations, and their reference pronouns all semantically related to one another)show significant differences in theuse of the diversity and maturity of vocabulary in chains as measured by word frequency in the lexicon asa whole.
