The North Atlantic Treaty Organization(NATO)is a multilateral political and military alliance bounded by explicit collective defense obligations.It was established in April 1949 by the United States and a handful of European countries in response to the perceived threat posed by the Soviet Union.During the Cold War,NATO played its role mainly in Europe,which was the primary arena of US-Soviet competition.
