?-Phenyl－4－aroylfuran－3－carboxylic acids were reduced in aqueous alkaline solutions ofNaBH4 to afford hydroxy acids in excellent yields． Under the catalysis of boron trifluoride etherate，the hydroxy acids were converted to lactones smoothly．
