新疆地处中国西北边陲，与苏联接壤，时任新疆督办的盛世才在政治上奉行六大政策，与中央政府保持半独立的状态，使新疆成为抗日战争的后方和中共与苏联来往的重要通道。对中共而言新疆工作是十分重要的，然而在新疆的工作又有许多不确定的因素。陈潭秋到新疆主持中共的地方工作是临危受命，勉为其难。在新工作四年中，陈潭秋按照党中央的指示做了不少有益的工作。他政治经验丰富，最早向党中央发出了新疆工作的警报。然而中共中央、共产国际、苏联基于种种考虑，未能采取果断措施，及时撤出在新工作人员，导致陈潭秋等80余人在新疆事变中被杀害，这是中国共产党在第二次国共合作时期继皖南事变后遭到的第二次重大打击。由于盛世才深藏不露，及时识破其真面目并非易事，这在一定程度上说明抗战时期新疆工作的复杂性与艰巨性。%Located in the Northwest of China, Xinjiang, which borders with the Soviet Union, Sheng Shicai of Xinjiang's supervision pursued the Six Policy, connected with the Central Government in the semi-independent State, which made Xinjiang become the rear of the Sino-Japanese war and the important channel between Chinese Communist Party and the Soviet Union. It was very important for the Communists' work in Xinjiang, but there were many uncertain factors in it. Chen Tanqiu was entrusted with a mission at a critical and difficult moment to preside over the local work of Communist Party in Xinjiang. In four years' work, Chen Tanqiu in accordance with the instructions of the Party Central Committee had done a lot of rewarding work. He issued the alert about Xinjiang's work to the Party Central Committee at the earliest with his rich political experience. However the Communist Party of China, the Communist International and the Soviet Union, based on various considerations, had failed to take decisive measures to withdraw the Xinjiang's staff in a timely manner, and resulted in Chen Tanqiu and other more than 80 people were murdered in Xinjiang incident, which was the second major blow after the south Anhui incident during the second cooperation between the Kuomintang and the Chinese Communist Party. Because Sheng Shicai hided his capacities and bide his time, it was not an easy task to discover his true feature in a timely manner, which to some extent explained the complexity and difficulty of the work in Xinjiang during the Sino-Japanese war.
