This study was designed to document the use of Kirkpatrick's four levels of evaluation. Kirkpatrick's four levels is a long standing training evaluation classification scheme for evaluating training that has been advocated for use in evaluating performance improvement initiatives. Although it was never designed for non-training performance improvement interventions and never intended to be considered a model for evaluation, Kirkpatrick's four levels have been cited as the dominant evaluation model in performance improvement.;This inquiry used content analysis to examine published case studies describing authentic organization performance improvement situations. The individual case analyses were followed by a cross-case aggregation designed to identify patterns of performance improvement practices by practitioners.
