Rebel methods: Activists, historians, and the needs of a suffering world.

This thesis reimagines the landscape of present historiography through interdisciplinary and activist projects and reveals the possibility of history as praxis. I include two activist collectives, The Beehive Collective and Cascadia Forest Defenders; two interdisciplinary intellectuals, Saidiya Hartman and Angela Davis; and two historians, Elsa Barkely Brown and Barbara Fields. Chapter One, "Participatory History," considers how participatory cultural modalities have democratized historical methodologies. Chapter Two, "On the Body of the Present," argues for historians to bring their studies of the past into a closer relationship with the present. Chapter Three, "Historicizing Structures of Consciousness," is about the use of historicizing discourse for dismantling oppressive or hegemonic ways of knowing. Ultimately, I use the common terrain of methodology to challenge activists to think more like historians, and historians to think more like activists.
