The purpose of the present study was to investigate expatriate management issues in the hotel industry in China. In-depth interviews were conducted with 11 expatriate hotel general managers who had spent an average of 5.8 years working in China. Qualitative methodology was utilized to identify themes regarding differences and difficulties general managers encountered managing a hotel in China. Four overall themes emerged from the analysis of the results. These themes included specific difficulties that expatriate general managers have encountered in dealing with employees, government, suppliers and owners, as well as other operational differences and difficulties. Coping strategies and underlying influencing factors were also discussed. A conceptual framework of expatriate management issues in the hotel industry in China was developed based on an intense scrutiny of textual data collected from in-depth interviews.
