Comics and graphic novels have become increasingly popular in the field of education. Where the genre of comics and graphic novels was in the past typically excluded from school libraries and classrooms, their popularity has made the format more likely to be found in library collections for recreational reading and for academic purposes.;This research presents Missouri school library media specialists opinions of comics and graphic novels and their use in the library and in schools. Responses were collected from Missouri school library media specialists using a convenience sampling of self selected respondents. Respondents presented ideas on the collection development and promotion of comics and graphic novels in the school setting. Before the survey results are described, a brief history of comic books and graphic novels and their popularity in mainstream culture is presented. The concentration of the paper is on using comic books and graphic novels in K12 schools.
