Creation and Maintenance of a Culture of Violence in Eastern Congo.

There are all sorts of violence observed in Central Africa today. Yet, the intensity and violent nature of the conflicts going on in Eastern Congo for the last eighteen years deserves a special investigation. My dissertation research examines socio-cultural changes that sustain a creation of a culture of violence in the region. Also, the global ramification of the violence may help us understand the motives behind the creation and maintenance of that culture of violence. An observation of East Congolese behavior may allow us to draw conclusions about the social and cultural impact of the conflicts on local cultures. The research explores the relationship between the new culture of violence and the efforts of multinational corporations to influence the creation of a new dominant class that may develop mercantile relations with them for an easier exploitation of Congolese natural resources. This thesis is being developed within a multidisciplinary context of post-colonial theories, socio-cultural change and "cultural production and reproduction.".
