Implications of gender roles when considering the clinician-client relationship during aphasia therapy sessions.

The purpose of this study is to learn more about the effect that the gender of the clinician has on the client during aphasia therapy sessions. 53 undergraduate and graduate students, in a university's Communication Sciences and Disorders program, participated in the study. Participants watched 13 minutes of pre-selected therapy clips. Half of the therapy sessions were lead by a male clinician, and half were lead by a female clinician. All therapy sessions included the same client with aphasia, who is a male senior citizen. After viewing, each participant completed a questionnaire designed to address the clinicians' linguistic, non-linguistic, and paralinguistic behaviors. The data collected through participant responses were synthesized to formulate a comprehensive overview of observations and interpretations made. Additionally, a descriptive account of the data was provided where significant findings and features were highlighted and compared between the two clinicians.
