Decision Making in Sexual Abuse Investigations; among Graduate Students, Law Enforcement and Mental Health Professionals.

Psychologists are often involved in sexual abuse cases, and understanding the decision process is vital for professionals to conclude a crime has occurred. Despite this known importance, currently there is no standard to make this decision . Using a cognitive problem solving perspective, this study looked at 4 decision models to determine which decision model- the 2-option choice, 3-option choice, probability, or credibility rating models -was more useful for evidence evaluation. This study utilized a convenience sample of 132 graduate students, law enforcement, and mental health professionals. Each decision model was compared to determine how decisions may significantly differ between models and if the use of various options increased the range of conclusions or certainty of the decisions. Decision models were compared via the use of a t test, analysis of variance, and chi square tests, which found that (a) respondents made a significant switch to the middle alternative when given this option, (b) a significant number of respondents switched to different decisions on the different decision models, and (c) most respondents who felt a crime occurred did not meet the level of confidence associated with the required legal standard. These findings facilitate social change by informing those involved in sexual abuse investigations about the utility of various decision models.
