BOISE STATE UNIVERSITY, THE FIRST FIFTY YEARS: 1932-1982 (IDAHO).

Boise State University is celebrating its fiftieth anniversary in 1982. Boise Junior College was established in 1932, by the Episcopal Bishop of Idaho, following two decades of studies recommending establishment of a junior college in the State capital. In 1934, the school was taken over by a private, nonprofit organization, Boise Junior College, Inc. The state legislature, after extensive lobbying by Boise residents, students, and other friends of the struggling institution, adopted a law in 1939 permitting certain school districts in the State to form junior college districts. In 1940, the new public institution moved to a large but empty site--the old municipal airport--in downtown Boise. The school was built with the proceeds of a series of bond issues approved by the voters. In 1965, Boise Junior College became Boise College, offering a full four-year program, following adoption of another legislative measure. In 1969, Boise College became Boise State College, for the first time under the control of the State Board of Education. The status of a university was achieved in 1974.;Throughout the study, an attempt was made to explain the reasons for and the consequences of major events in the institution's history. The impact of particular individuals on the institution was emphasized, as was the influence of broad national and local currents.;The purpose of the study was to present a detailed history of the school. Separate chapters were devoted to: (1) the founding of the college; (2) religious influences on the institution; (3) past administrations and presidents; (4) the three phases of the institution; and (5) a summary and conclusions. The introductory chapter, in addition to the usual sections, sought to develop a conceptual framework for the study.
