The aim of this thesis is to analyse the question of "desire", as it is related to "writing" in the first six sections of the "corpus" of Luis Cernuda's work La realidad y el deseo(1924-1935). Desire not only constitutes the theme of this work but is also its driving force, its structuring element; since writing is the sphere in which desire is projected, desire is, in fact, the text's secret and most intimate logic.; In order to set this question in its proper perspective, the study begins with an analysis of the poet's "library"--that is to say, of his readings--during the time he wrote these first six books. This initial study is necessary since, as Lacan remarks, "one man's desire is that of another"; that is to say, Luis Cernuda comes to recognize his desire in his readings of other poets belonging to the Spanish and European poetic traditions: through them he establishes his own work as a poetry of desire. In the second part of the thesis, the way in which desire constitutes the driving force in the corpus of Cernuda's work is then subjected to detailed analysis.; As a result of the analysis carried out in both sections, the thesis hopes to demonstrate that, although the question of desire has its roots in Romanticism (roots which Cernuda will rediscover in his readings of different texts), the poet's creative work involves an essential element of criticism and that it is this critical instance which distinguishes Cernuda as a genuinely modern poet.
