This proposed methodology for optimal form synthesis is a geometric scheme where the objective of maximum use of material within the allowable stress constraints is pursued.; This new procedure is a marked departure from previous approaches. Synthesis of the optimal form of any mechanical or structural component begins from its basic 2-D or 3-D geometry. The finite element method is used as a primarily tool for analysis, and a set of programmed rules are employed to interactively modify the shape. This procedure is capable of handling any prescribed load and support conditions.; The set of rules used in the process is based on previous knowledge of the system and experience with such problems.
