The purpose of this study has been to investigate the accuracy of formation temperatures as determined from hydrocarbon exploration wells. The main data sources are temperatures recorded during drill stem tests and maximum temperatures from well logs.;Data from all wells drilled for licenses awarded after 1975 (about 430 wells) in the Norwegian North Sea have been investigated. The DSTs give fairly consistent formation temperatures, with a standard deviation of about 1.5;On the other hand, formation temperatures determined from well logs give very poor results, independent of the methods which were used to calculate the true formation temperature. The standard deviation for the best of these methods is 6.7;The heat flow in the Norwegian North Sea has been investigated using only high quality temperature data (from DSTs). The heat flow appears to be close to constant in the investigated area. Most of the deviations from the average heat flow can be readily explained by thermal conductivity contrasts.
