Cold acclimation and the role of proteins in lipid metabolism.

Brassica napus (var. Westar) plants were used to study changes in protein profiles induced by low temperature exposure. Alterations in protein content during exposure to cold acclimating and deacclimating temperatures were investigated at the molecular level and compared with control plants using electrophoresis. Protein profiles obtained by 1- and 2-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis revealed qualitative and quantitative variations between plants subjected to different temperature regimes. Protein patterns of double haploid mutant B. napus varieties, with lower levels of unsaturated fatty acids at low physiological temperatures, were compared with wild type plants under cold acclimating, deacclimating and non-acclimating conditions. The differences in 2-D patterns found between the mutants were significant. However, the alterations in protein patterns were found to be subtler, less visually dramatic and slower than those in response to many other environmental stresses. The changes in protein patterns were used to identify potential candidates for the proposed desaturase modulator entity.
