Testing the chloride ion permeability of normal weight concrete using the test procedure defined by the Association of American State Highway Testing Officials (AASHTO) test procedure number T 277 is widely accepted by engineers to be a valid method. However, the effectiveness of this procedure in regards to lightweight concrete has not been widely investigated. While a considerable amount of research has been done using normal weight concrete, there has been a lack of research done to show how lightweight concrete compares to normal weight concrete using this test procedure. The increasing use of lightweight concrete in the areas where chloride ion permeability is a concern has inevitably created a need for such research. Therefore, the limited experiments of this thesis provide results intended to be a part of the development of a correlation between lightweight and normal weight concrete chloride ion permeability.
