摘要

This thesis discusses bibliotherapy as a motif in the works of Canadian children's author Jean Little. To date, there has been no thorough study of Little's substantial body of literature, and works on bibliotherapy tend to explore its origins and its applications, but do not critically research its literary expression. Both topics will be addressed in this thesis, because, to varying degrees, the therapeutic value of books is consistently manifested in Little's settings and themes and in her plot and character development. This thesis will explore Little's social realism in depicting children in handicapping situations, and will argue that Little approaches her readers as a bibliotherapist, intent on enriching their lives through a literary connection. Jean Little is an established and respected writer whose works should advance the inclusion of handicapped children in literature and contribute to a better understanding of bibliotherapy, a growing but immature discipline.
