W. E. B. Du Bois consistently addressed the matter of education for African Americans in his various writings and speeches. He dealt with this matter as a critical element in his overall philosophy for race uplift and leadership development. This dissertation illustrates the relevance of Du Bois's philosophy of education for three contemporary issues in education of significance to African Americans.;The three research questions for this dissertation are: (1) What is the relevance of Du Bois's philosophy of education for black educational institutions? (2) What is the relevance of Du Bois's philosophy of education for the presence of African Americans in higher education? and (3) What is the relevance of Du Bois's philosophy of education for afrocentric curriculum? The first question includes a consideration of the historically black college and the urban black male academy. The second question includes a consideration of black faculty and Ph.D. students and African Americans in math and science fields of study. The third question considers black studies in elementary and secondary schools and higher education, and identifies certain precursors to contemporary afrocentric curriculum concepts.;The methodology for this dissertation includes the critical and analytical examination of both primary and secondary sources on the topic. Each research question is treated systematically to include: (1) a statement of the issue and its contemporary significance; (2) historical antecedents to the issue; and (3) current discussion and opinions on the issue. The parallel treat of each research question is also followed by an extrapolation of Du Bois's views on the issue and what we could expect him to say on the issue today. Finally, this dissertation organizes Du Bois's thoughts and views on education and sets them in the larger context of educational foundations.
