This research was an ethnographic study of ceramic vessel usage in modern Egypt. The hypothesis of this study was that patterning can be found in the use-life of modern Egyptian pottery. The purpose of this study was to detail technological and social aspects of ceramic vessel production, distribution, use, reuse, and discard, i.e., to record a "lifecycle" of ceramic vessels in order to determine the patterns, if any, that existed.; With direct observation and personal interviews of potters, vendors, and households in Lower, Middle, and Upper Egypt, this research illustrated the role that pottery plays in modern Eygpt, including the interaction of the people with the artifact. Lifecycles were found to exist, but each lifecycle varied according to vessel type. This work is valuable in providing a framework for further pottery studies in other areas of the world.
