The TAP-2 multifunctional reactor system and Laser Raman Spectroscopy (LRS) were used evaluate the performance of VPO catalysts. The TAP-2 was used to perform catalyst treatment and test the kinetic performance of the catalyst at various points before and after the treatments. The Raman system was used to characterize the bulk structure of the catalyst before and after the treatments and this information, coupled with the kinetic performance of the catalyst, was used to develop a model of the catalyst which explains its performance. Experiments were performed at vacuum and atmospheric pressures under steady-state and transient reaction conditions. Optimal treatment conditions were determined and are reported. Quantitative oxygen uptake and oxygen titrations were performed to determine the nature of the adsorbed oxygen species.
