This dissertation discusses the role of Balinese women, especially in the tourism business. It begins by surveying studies of gender in Southeast Asia and Bali, many of which claimed to find a type of gender egalitarianism. Other scholars pointed out such characteristics as patrilocality and women's limited. inheritance rights in Bali.; To gauge the status of Balinese women, the dissertation examines their ability to take advantage of opportunities provided by the advent of mass tourism. Data collection consisted mostly of obtaining the life histories of eight relatively successful businesswomen in the tourism industry in Ubud. Most of the women were lower caste, suggesting that their caste was not a serious impediment. What many of the women did have in common was experience in the market. The importance of the marital relationship was mixed. Some women were assisted by supportive husbands; others succeeded despite a bad marriage. Motherhood was important because it provided skills that could easily be transferred to the business of providing food and accommodations. The attitudes of the larger community were mixed. People appreciated the economic benefits that these women provided, but others subjected them to rather vicious gossip.; An important factor in the success of these women is their connections with foreigners. Early tourists in Ubud encouraged these women to begin or expand their businesses. Some provided money for them to get started. Virtually all women learned a great deal about how to accommodate western tastes from their foreign friends.; There is no doubt that women's roles are changing with the advent of tourism. Balinese women are well aware that they must seek a balance between tradition and modernity. In general, the main informants for this study are able to move from one world to the other with relative grace.; The dissertation concludes with interviews of younger women, who grew up as contact with Westerners is becoming ever more intense. These women are very attracted to modern ways. Whether they will be able to find a similar balance is, unfortunately, much harder to predict.
