Evolution of a tourism attraction: Incorporating conservation at the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre.

In an attempt to contribute meaningfully to global aquatic conservation measures, public aquariums have evolved from entertainment attractions to credible conservation organizations with multiple goals. The objectives of this research were threefold: to understand how the conservation role of public aquariums has changed with respect to entertainment, education and research; to assess public response to these changing roles; and to assess strategic directions and management implications based on this public response. Research findings highlighted several key points through a World Wide Web survey of public attitudes toward the conservation potential of public aquariums, and a case study of the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre (VAMSC) in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The nucleus and use of marker elements of the aquarium attraction system have been modified to better communicate a conservation oriented image and message.
