Rewriting the nation: Nationalism, multiculturalism, and the pedagogic apparatus.

Over the past decade, cultural debate has centered on arguments of inclusion and exclusion as America has moved toward a multicultural society. As the culture is rewritten, we have moved further away from the old monocultural narrative of nationalism, but these revisions have not happened without struggle. These revisions, formed through a discursive contest between the residual cultural formation of nationalism and the emerging cultural formation of multiculturalism, form a pedagogical apparatus that will define the character of America for years to come. Using theorists and critics, such as Raymond Williams, Antonio Gramsci, Benedict Anderson, and Mary Louise Pratt, my project examines numerous cultural sites where this rewriting is taking place, including college textbooks, national monuments, and Ken Burns's PBS documentary Baseball. In examining these sites, I reveal the state of the pedagogical apparatus that results from this discursive struggle.
