摘要

This study explored the process of men reconciling their spirituality and homosexuality. Using the organic inquiry transpersonal research method, 12 gay men participated as coresearchers in semi-structured interviews. The coresearchers utilized creative expression to help bring forth their stories. The transcripts were edited down to the essence of each man's story, and submitted to each of the men for their approval. After the interview coresearchers were asked to report on perceived change from being part of the process. All coresearchers reported change. Qualitative data analysis comprised of several readings of the edited stories to code the most prevalent themes. Major themes were shared by all coresearchers. Medium themes were shared among 6-10 coresearchers. The major themes were: Self-denial, Exploration, Affirmation, and Self-acceptance. The medium themes were: Early spiritual connection, Early awareness of same-sex attraction, Early awareness of societal/familial attitudes about gayness, Rejection by others because of gayness, and Lack of models for how to be. Coresearchers were also asked questions to illuminate shifting meaning ascribed to spirituality and gayness over time. The majority reported that the meaning of gayness had become more positive over time. Less homogeneity was found in the shifting meaning of spirituality. The research project supports that the spiritual journey of gay men has unique features, and posits new ways to research the intersections of homosexuality and spirituality. The study highlights the need for additional research on the themes uncovered, and to provide further insight into the spiritual journeys of LGBT individuals.
