More than one hundred years after his tragic death at a young age, the Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh is one of the most popular cultural phenomenons in the world. Through an investigation and discussion of van Gogh's century-long rise to fame, it may be possible to trace the process of the artist's path to distinction and to offer a comprehensive understanding of how one artist became much more than his art. Following the trail of Vincent van Gogh's burgeoning popularity throughout the twentieth century, this examination will unravel some of the critical elements that have contributed to the creation of this immensely popular legend. Historical, personal, economic, and literary components have contributed greatly to the icon that is known globally today as Vincent van Gogh.
