Searching for the antecedents of voluntary turnover in information systems personnel: A concatenation of competing models.

Although job satisfaction and employee turnover have been two of the most studied topics in both academic and practitioner research over the last 40 years, this extensive research has still resulted in explaining less than 20 percent of the variance in turnover. Even in times of high unemployment, business and other organizations are interested in managing the turnover rates of their Information Systems personnel.{09}By more fully understanding the processes that an employee goes through in making the voluntary turnover decision, the employer will be better able to retain key employees.; The researched model of voluntary employee turnover concatenates the three current primary research tracks and is shown to be a better predictor of turnover actions. It also provides a richer understanding of the causal relationships leading to the turnover decision. Results of two datasets (IS personnel and non-IS personnel) were analyzed using PLS Graph, a structural equation modeling technique. The analysis also empirically reflects the differences in importance that IS personnel place on components of job satisfaction versus that placed by non-IS personnel.
