Lines in the sea, words in the sand: On the refugee and the politics of refuge.

摘要

This dissertation addresses the problem of refuge faced by the increasing numbers of displaced people in the world today. The first chapter discusses the paradox of asylum in contemporary policy, especially regarding extraterritorial detainment camps for asylum seekers in the EU and Australia. The second chapter examines the concept of the book as refuge as an alternative to the failing institutional forms on offer. The third chapter explores the universality of the refugee condition in light of the events in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, while the final chapter proposes the global city as the most adequate material form of refuge in today's political conditions.
