Interpreting Cuba: Feature travel stories in American newspapers.

By analyzing twenty travel articles published in American newspapers, this thesis seeks to find how Cuba is interpreted for American readers. It examines methods used by the travel writers to immerse themselves in Cuban landscapes, as well as the symbols of Cuba on which the writers focused. It also looks at writers' interpretations of Cuba's economic and political situation.; The variety of perceptions exhibited in the twenty articles supports the hermeneutic position which states that by integrating multiple views, a more complex and complete depiction of a place emerges. Throughout these varied and sometimes competing views of Cuba, one message that recurs is that it is a more accessible place than many Americans might think.
