Interorganizational and interpersonal challenges for library partnerships in higher education.

The purpose of this study was to examine the various strategies and interorganizational relationships that have been fostered by academic libraries in order to support a changing instructional paradigm in an institution of higher education. This study explored the interorganizational structures and processes used by an institution of higher education that is developing partnerships for the purpose of taking a collaborative approach to transforming instruction and learning at the academic institution.; A review of the literature has supported the reasoning that institutions are now exploring partnerships that are being established between academic libraries, academic faculty, and technology units. The literature suggests that a new model for the delivery of instruction and learning is evolving, and the changing roles and relationships of faculty, academic libraries, and technology units must be studied in order to assist in this educational transformation process.; This study investigated the characteristics of these new relationships and roles using Intriligator's Interorganizational Arrangements Model (IAM). Using the Instructional Partnership Interview, an instrument designed by the researcher, qualitative data about the evolving partnership within the institution under study were collected.; The perceptions of the responding groups identified that the library has taken a leadership role in the development of the Teaching and Learning Partnership (TLP). Because the TLP is developing many of the organizational procedures that should be in place have not be discussed or formalized. However, the interview questions have given the respondents resources to further develop the TLP.; There is a broader application of this research to other developing partnerships. The findings of this study reinforce the academic library's leadership role within the academic institution and the role the library needs to play in the teaching and learning process.
