Best Practice Intervention Strategies for the Post-surgical Pre-prosthetic Care of Upper Extremity Amputation: A Systematic Literature Review.

The purpose of this study was to systematically examine the state of research on occupational therapy's role in the pre-prosthetic management of upper extremity amputation. Five databases were searched: CINAHL Plus with full-text, Cochrane Library, Medline with full text, ProQuest Medical Library, and PubMed. Ten articles met the inclusion criteria for use in this literature review. Five themes were identified as important to the role of the occupational therapist including: Client Centered Practice, Client Factors, Performance Skills, Activity Demands, and Areas of Occupation, which were then broken down into pertinent subthemes. The authors concluded that all areas pertaining to the research question require more thorough and rigorous study as the majority of the articles relied on case studies and expert opinion.;Keywords: amputation, upper extremity, activities of daily living, occupational therapy, desensitization, psychosocial aspects of amputation.
