The purpose of this action research study was to investigate the effects of multicultural books on the reading interest of first grade students. This six-week study took place in a first grade classroom in a Title I school in Northern California. The data collected in this study consisted of pre and post interviews, sticker charts (indicating the number of books read), surveys, and assessments of reading levels. In order to evaluate the interest of books, students were given two weeks to read from the classroom library, two weeks to read from the multicultural library, and two weeks where the students were able to choose a book to read from either library. Despite the opportunity to choose multicultural books, the outcome of the study concluded that the students were more interested in the regular classroom library books over those in the multicultural library.
