Development and testing of the Creative Nursing Practice Index (CNPI).

The importance of studying creativity has become better recognized in nursing within the last few years. One major difficulty that nursing researchers have encountered when engaging in real-life nursing creativity research is a lack of research instruments enabling one to assess creativity in nursing practice. The purpose of this research was to develop a new instrument for creative nursing practice and to establish initial evidence of reliability and validity. The creative nursing practice index (CNPI) was developed on the basis of the measurement model of creative nursing practice developed by the investigator inspired by Amabile's (1996) componential model of creativity. The CNPI was created with bilingual versions (i.e., English and Korean). The Korean version of the CNPI was examined with 613 registered nurses at two teaching hospitals in Korea. Forty-four items were selected for the final version of the CNPI by item analysis. Cronbach's alpha estimate of the overall CNPI was .94 and Cronbach's alpha estimates for the CNPI dimensions ranged from .82 to .88. Based on the confirmatory factor analysis, the creative nursing practice model fitted the data well. The scores on the CNPI measuring creative nursing practice were significantly related to the nurses' ages, educational levels, career experience, job complexity, and care specialties. The study findings initially supported the CNPI's reliability and content and construct validity. The CNPI consisted of 13 items for the creativity-relevant motivation dimension; 9 items for the creativity-relevant skills dimension; 11 items for the creative activities dimension; and, 11 items for the creative nursing performance dimension. From the multi-faceted perspectives of the construct of creativity, the investigator developed the CNPI and its items, customizing it to the nursing domain in order to measure real-life creativity in nursing practice. However, there was a lack of information regarding the CNPI's criterion-related validity and the risk of response bias. Further research studies should be replicated in the nurse population in order to assure the psychometric quality of the CNPI. Development of the CNPI may be helpful for nursing researchers investigating the construct of creativity in nursing practice and for refining creativity theories in the nursing domain.
