Dynamic constitutive behavior and shock response of cast iron.

An experimental study on the dynamic compressive constitutive behavior, as well as the shock response of cast iron was undertaken. The dynamic compressive experiments were conducted utilizing a Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) apparatus, from which the data collected was used to develop a portrait of the dynamic constitutive behavior of this material, for comparison to quasi-static test results previously acquired. Additional compressive experiments were performed on the SHPB at elevated temperatures. After processing and analysis, these results were compared with those taken from the room temperature experiments, to develop an understanding of the effect of temperature on the cast iron's behavior. Shock experiments were performed using a Shock Tube apparatus. Experiments were performed at various pressures and under different boundary conditions, to understand the effect of different shock intensities on the cast iron, as well as to observe the effect of the boundary conditions on its resistance to shock loading. Full field strain and displacement data was taken from these experiments using a 3D Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique. The cast irons to be investigated were provided to the University of Rhode Island all preceding quasi static tests used in comparison were complete. Final determinations regarding the performance of the three cast irons were made taking into account the micro structural observations made of each cast iron. These novel high temperature SHPB experiments, along with the Shock experimentation, represent a new addition to the characterization of cast iron, and is research that to this point has not been explored before.
