The purpose of this study was to compare selected physiological responses to single and multiple-set resistance exercise in individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Six volunteers (66.3 ± 7.8 yrs) with COPD completed sessions consisting of the following set and repetition combinations: 1 x 10 to fatigue, 3 x 6 at 80% of subjects' one repetition maximum (1RM) and 3 x 12 at 60% 1RM for eight exercises.; Results indicate that systolic blood pressure and dyspnea ratings (% maximum) were significantly greater (p 0.05) for the 3 x 12 than the 1 x 10 and 3 x 6 sessions. Mean heart rate, rate pressure product, oxygen saturation, ratings of perceived exertion and blood lactate concentrations were not significantly different across sessions. Moreover, blood pressure and oxygen saturation levels did not exceed safety thresholds.; These data demonstrate that resistance training protocols of higher intensity can be safely performed in persons even with severe COPD without cardiopulmonary abnormalities or musculoskeletal injuries and therefore should not be discouraged.
