As our world becomes increasingly complex, education has a critical role to play in preparing people to envision, craft, and participate effectively in the social, environmental, and economic systems that will form a sustainable future. This thesis envisions that critical role by examining the shift from traditional environmental education to sustainability education. The author convened an action research process with other educators, co-facilitating a focus group of colleagues who shared the goal of deepening their understanding and practice of sustainability education.;In addition to the action research focus group, the author conducted phenomenological case study research designed to understand different approaches to sustainability education at four residential environmental education centers in Maine. The result is a learning center program design based on the research results and the author's ideas of systems-oriented learning experiences -- the nested systems of sustainability education. .
