摘要

Purpose: To create an evidence-based learning activity on how to care for low income, ethnic minority women with chronic conditions through the lens of cultural humility by practicing motivational interviewing (MI).;Rationale/Background: Health disparity gaps based on income and ethnicity exist in the U.S., and ethnic minority groups have poorer health and have different prevalence rates of chronic conditions. According to the standard of professional nursing practice, nurses have a duty to provide health teaching and promote healthy life-styles, risk-reducing behaviors, and preventative self-care using methods appropriate to the client's values, beliefs, health practices, culture, and socioeconomic status. Diverse populations in the U.S. are continuously growing, and future nurses need to be prepared to care for these populations.;Methods: Ten women from a local community organization that serves low income, ethnic minority women were recruited as consultants to provide their perspectives on what successful teaching and relationship with a healthcare provider would look like. Consultants were adult women 18 years of age and over, self-identified as an ethnic minority (including biracial), and self-reported as having at least one physical chronic condition. Interviews were conducted in English. Information from the interviews were used to create a learning activity for nursing students. Content on cultural humility and MI were created. Cultural humility was emphasized as the lens through which to practice MI.;Outcomes achieved: Final products of the learning activity includes overview of learning activity, a note to educators, rubrics, teaching table, and content on cultural humility and MI. This learning activity will be implemented in the pre-licensure masters nursing program at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at University of California, Davis. A partnership was created between the School of Nursing and the local community organization, Wellspring Women's Center, as a potential clinical site for pre-licensure nursing students to care for low income women with chronic conditions.;Conclusion: This learning activity can be applied to teach nursing students in pre-licensure programs how to care for low income, ethnic minority women with chronic conditions in a client-centered, culturally sensitive manner to help close the health disparity gap. The messages and stories of the consultants were continuously reflected upon during the creation of the learning activity to ensure the client perspective. Further research is needed to explore student perceptions of the learning activity, measure client outcomes and explore client perceptions as a result of nursing student teaching, and determine if the activity can be applied to other populations.
