Museums with movable walls: Public outreach and community uplift in the American urban museum.

Over the past two centuries, the American museum has embodied several forms and roles. This thesis examines the philosophical and practical transformations within the museum community from collection houses for the economic elite to neighborhood centers dedicated to the education of the masses. The eras of "Old Museology" and "New Museology" are discussed along with the introduction of the community-centric concept of "New New Museology.";Specific analysis addresses three Chicago, Illinois, museums that are currently embracing "New New Museology." The public education and community outreach programs at the Field Museum of Natural History, DuSable Museum of African American History, and the National Museum of Mexican Art are used to illustrate this philosophical trend within museums in urban areas.
