The relationship between comfort in sexual communication and prevalence of Chlamydia knowledge among intergenerational Latina adult and adolescent family-based dyads.

Latinas experience structural (access to culturally and linguistically-relevant education/health providers, the health care system, etc.) and cultural sexual health barriers (traditional gender roles, sexual taboos, etc.). A sample of 307 Latina adult and adolescent intergenerational family-based dyads residing in Los Angeles County, California provided baseline data. Hypotheses were developed based on literature review and preliminary data analyses. The following variables were measured: adults' education levels or time spent in the United States and Chlamydia knowledge (CK) or comfort in sexual communication (CSC) with an adolescent; CSC between the adult-adolescent dyad and CK, or the CSC of adolescent and adult Latinas with sexual partners. Statistically significant relationships were found in amount of years Latina adults lived in the United States and CK; adults CSC and adolescents CSC; CSC of both participants and CSC with a sexual partner; and CSC regarding sexually transmitted infections (STIs) within the adult-adolescent relationship and adolescents CK.
