Zwei zentrale Probleme der moderne: Verselbstung und Entselbstung.

This thesis analyses two central problems of modern thought, 'Verselbstung' and 'Entselbstung', and offers a critical discussion of these terms and conceptions in a selection of works by the German authors Goethe and Hölderlin. The term 'modern' will be defined as a relational concept that marks the difference between the antique, Aristotelian way of understanding substance and the 'modern' phenomenal perception of the world that arises during the Renaissance and leads to a separation between subject and object.;Several questions will be raised through the discussion of these topics. The central question of the paper is, how the concepts of 'Verselbstung' and 'Entselbstung' are related to each other within the works of Goethe and Hölderlin. Integral to the discussion is the importance of beauty and the freedom that is to be gained by it.;The first part of this paper introduces to the difference between antique and modern thought and how it reflects in art and literature, as well as to the concepts of 'Verselbstung' and 'Entselbstung' and their relation to aesthetics. The second part discusses these central problems within the aesthetical philosophy of the early writings of Johann Christian Friedrich Hölderlin. The third section focuses on the poetological concept of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's West-östlicher Divan and its way of resolving the problem of 'Verselbstung' through 'Entselbstung'.
