The phenomenology of courage (Plato, Herodotus, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Alexis de Tocqueville).

摘要

An explicit departure from the rational actor model of political science, this study compares and contrasts martial courage with types of courage not bound up with honor and violence. The project looks at political courage in ancient Athens, moral courage in the works J. J. Rousseau, and Alexis de Tocqueville's effort to ennoble democracy with the idea of economic courage. It is argued that these various types of courage reveal specific cares, commitments, and concerns that underwrite fundamentally different modes of political order.
