Performing modernity in the writings of Nguye˜n An Ninh and Phan Van Hum.

摘要

This dissertation is an intellectual history of the 1920s and 1930s in Vie&dotbelow;t Nam. It traces a number of intellectual and social movements during this time through the writings of two prominent anti-colonial activists and journalists, Nguye˜n An Ninh and Phan Van Hum. Using a reading of the vernacular press, it seeks to examine how they understood their own roles within and against various "constructions" of colonial discourse and ideology, as determined by their positions as a non-aligned Marxist and as a Trotskyite, respectively. More broadly this work traces a history of Vietnamese mentalites for this period, with a focus on its fads and fashions, including the influences of bourgeois commercialization and its social imaginary.
