This dissertation studies the relations between Spanish Early Modern autobiography and its contemporary discourses, mainly historiography and fiction. It argues that in a time when autobiography is not a defined genre, writers who choose to narrate their lives do so in close relation with discourses that are socially prestigious (historiography) or popularly acclaimed (literature).; In the first chapter I study the Memorial of Leonor Lopez de Cordoba, the Breve suma de la vida y hechos of Diego Garcia de Paredes and the Cautiverio y trabajos de Diego Galan. Lopez de Cordoba narrates difficult passages of her life recurring to hagiography and mainly to historiography as models. I argue that Lopez de Cordoba writes with constant reference to historiography, and with the desire to replace official history with her own version of the facts. Paredes narrates duels and military achievements in the form of vignettes that he offers to his son with the purpose of educating him in honor and courage. In telling his deeds, Paredes reminds of the crude actions of some chivalric heroes. Galan narrates ten years of captivity among Muslims and his escape. To publish his personal account, he rewrites a plane but expressive narrative into a rhetorically overcharged and literature-infected narrative that is much more a novelized autobiography.; Enriquez de Guzman writes his autobiography following the miscellaneous works of Antonio de Guevara and Pedro Mexia as models. Enriquez de Guzman transcribes letters addressed to important people and offers news about his travels and about strange facts he witnessed. His goal is to both educate and amuse his potential readers. In content and structure Enriquez de Guzman's Libro de la vida y costumbres reminds Guevara's Epistolas familiares and Mexia's Silva de varia leccion.; At the same time, we see how Enriquez de Guzman can easily quote and insert passages of poetry, popular or erudite, in his prose. In so doing he shows how the popular or prestigious literature of an epoch can help to give shape to an autobiography in a moment in time when autobiographies are not recognized as a genre (but as a discourse with a practical function: didactic, or as proof of merits) and its borders with other genres (e.g. historiography) are not clear.; This dissertation states that don Alonso writes the history of his life as a miscellaneous book with a specific intention: to please the members of the court, among whom he aims to find his place. Approaching the court as a man of pleasure, he intends to use his book as a substitute of himself (especially during his extensive traveling). The book was designed to fulfill in the court the same role its author plays among courtiers: to serve as a practical adviser and to entertain.
