Planting Bitterroot is an exploration, in poetry, of trauma and recovery. As in Ovid's myth of Philomela, a tapestry is woven telling the tale of abuse and emotional neglect. However, it goes well beyond that in showing how the author becomes aware of her courage to speak out and separate from the bindings created by parental abuse. The poems express the difficulty of letting go and the range of emotions in relation to one's parents. The crafting of these personal poems allowed moments of surprise and insight, showing the evolution of individuation.
