The Impact of Activities of the Bank Supervisory Department of the Bank of Ghana

The study is an empirical analysis of the impact of regulation and supervision on theactivities of Ghanaian banks with emphasis on the role of the Bank SupervisoryDepartment (BSD) of the Bank of Ghana.It evaluates the roles and contributions ofBSD to the Ghanaian banking sector.Extensive field survey and library research wascarried out and data collected were subjected to thorough analysis.The analysis showsthat the supervisory and regulatory framework of the BSD is not sufficient to guaranteeeffective banking practices in Ghana.
　　There is need to also increase the awareness of banking activities within the generalpopulace through a deliberate integration process aimed at demystifying certaininherent perceptions of depositors and non-depositors alike to rather see banks as thesafest place to keep their funds.
　　The study focuses also on the consolidation agenda of the Bank of Ghana and theprocesses, prospect and the challenges of consolidation.
　　A questionnaire and Skype based research was adopted for the study and the datacollated was tested using the chi-square analysis and supported by fundamentalevidence from the database of the regulatory authorities.
