Objective: To observe the results of repairing alveolar bone defect with the biological material by singl y using of carboxymethyl chitosan or tricalcium phosphate or compound material of the above or Biooss, which can induce osteogenesis. And to provide experimental basis for searching for the more ideal guided tissue regeneration (GTR) material.Materials and methods: 30 New Zealand rabbits were chosen and divided into 5 groups in random. In Group A, the blank control one, the mucoperiosteal flap was sutured directly after the animal model of periodontal disease was fabricated. In Group B, carboxymethyl chitosan was put into the bone defect a rea. In Group C, tricalcium phosphate was used singly. In Group D, the substance in Group B and C w as mixed and used. And in Group E, Bio-oss was used. These rabbits were killed at postoperative 4 we eks,8 weeks, and 12 weeks respectively. The osteogenesis effect was studied by X-ray, histopathology and image analysis. Results: The radiographs show that the boundary between the operative area and normal area is clear in Group A, a little dimmer in Group B and C, and not clear in Group D and E. The radiopacity at the boundary is not obvious in Group A, a little better in Group B and C, and obvious in Group D and E in which scattered particles appears clear. The tissue section images show that bone is generated in Group B, C, D and E compared with Group A and among the latter 4 groups, the osteogenesis effect of Group D and E is better. By image and statistical analysis, the difference between each 2 groups is significa nt with P<0.01 except between Group B and C, between Group D and E with P>0.05.Conclusion: The induction of osteogenesis effect of the compound material of carboxymethyl chitosan and tricalcium phosphate and Bio-oss is similar. Each has an ideal biocompatibility, a cheap price and a bright prospect in clinic.
